    Changing geography

Territories now in Ukraine belonged before the war to the Soviet Union, Poland, Romania, Hungary and Czechoslovakia. Statistics therefore require explicit borders and dates.

    Mass shootings

Einsatzgruppe C and D, SS and police formations, military authorities and identified auxiliaries participated in mass shootings across the region.

    Occupation zones

The District of Galicia, Romanian-administered Transnistria and other military and civil occupation zones produced different systems of persecution.

    Major sites

Babyn Yar, Kamianets-Podilskyi, Lviv, Odesa and many smaller sites reveal the breadth of destruction.

    Survival

Evacuation eastward, hiding, partisan activity and local circumstances produced sharply different survival experiences.
