Underground aid
Sendler used her professional access and underground contacts to assist Jews in occupied Warsaw.
Żegota
Under the alias Jolanta she worked within the Council for Aid to Jews, arranging hiding places, false identities and support.
Children and identity
She helped remove and place several hundred children and preserved original identity information; the claim of exactly 2,500 personally rescued children overstates secure documentation.
Arrest and torture
The Gestapo arrested and tortured Sendler. Żegota arranged a bribe that secured her release.
Networks, not one rescuer
Child rescue required parents, couriers, foster families, convents, document forgers, donors and Jewish organizers.
Recognition
Yad Vashem recognized Sendler as Righteous Among the Nations in 1965.
