    Holocaust Diaries: Writing During Persecution

Diaries written during the Holocaust preserve immediate observations, private fears, communal change and evolving knowledge in ways later testimony cannot fully reproduce.

    Why diaries matter

A diary records what a writer knew, believed and felt at a particular moment, before the outcome was known.

    Different settings

Important diaries come from ghettos, hiding places, camps and occupied cities.

    Examples

Anne Frank, Dawid Sierakowiak, Abraham Lewin, Adam Czerniaków, Janusz Korczak and Yitzhak Rudashevski belong to distinct historical settings.

    Limits

Diaries are personal sources, not complete community censuses; surviving fragments and postwar editing must be documented.

    Digital library

The site can link facsimiles, archival references, translations and contextual essays without reproducing long copyrighted passages.
